Sometimes, you don’t need to venture far to feel like you’ve had a real break. Today was one of those days where the sun was shining, the air was fresh, and I felt the pull to escape for a little while.

So, I hopped in the car and drove to Montague Orchard, which is just 20 minutes from home or 35 km from Melbourne. It’s become one of my favourite places for a quick getaway that feels miles away from the everyday.

I met up with some friends there, as we often do—we’re in the habit of meeting at Stella’s Kitchen, and we all love this spot.

It’s the perfect place to relax, have a delicious meal, and catch up in peaceful surroundings.

But before lunch, I made a stop next door at Bill’s Orchard Gate.

This little shop is packed with fresh apples, vegetables, homemade goodies, and unique gifts.

Today, I enjoyed browsing through the beautifully curated collection of teas, ceramics, and other local items, like chocolates and chutneys.

It’s such a treat to wander around the shop and find something special to bring home.

When it was time for lunch, we gathered at Stella’s Kitchen, which never disappoints. The café is stunning, with views of the orchard and gardens all around.

You can sit indoors or outside, soaking up the sun, with the herb garden growing nearby and ducks strolling around as if they owned the place.

I love the laid-back feel of the outdoor seating area—it’s perfect for a sunny day like today.

I have fond memories of sitting outside here on Christmas Eve morning, watching kangaroos hopping by—such a contrast to my Nordic childhood Christmas Eve mornings, filled with snow and winter’s chill.

I ordered the all-day breakfast, which was delicious as always.

The only slight disappointment was my chai. As you all know, chai is important to me, and while they do make a lovely one here, the serving size is just too small for what they charge. But really, it’s such a minor thing in an otherwise perfect visit.

Stella’s Kitchen is more than just a café—it’s a place to unwind, and today, with friends by my side, it felt even more special.

We laughed, shared stories, and just enjoyed being in such a beautiful setting. The garden views, the relaxed atmosphere, the special treats, and the simple pleasure of good food and company made it a day to remember.

While I didn’t visit Lysterfield Park this time, it’s right next door and always a lovely thing to do. With its walking trails around the lake and native wildlife like kangaroos and kookaburras, it’s the perfect way to end a visit to Montague when you have a bit more time.

Montague Orchard has become a go-to for me when I need a break, even if just for a few hours.

It’s close to home, yet always feels like a refreshing escape.

Whether it’s catching up with friends, enjoying the orchard views, or browsing the shop for local treats, there’s something special about this place.
