Sunshine and Smiles

Our time here at Bluestone Ridge at the Bald Hill Estate in the King Valley has truly been spectacular.

From the moment we arrived, we felt at home — despite being far from home. There’s something incredibly special about this place, something that goes beyond just comfort or even location.

What truly sets Bluestone Ridge apart is the thoughtful and creative design. Every element of the accommodation reflects absolute attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to quality. From the furnishings to the fixtures, everything has been carefully curated — not just to impress, but to create a genuine sense of ease and beauty. It’s the kind of quality you’d expect from the best hotels, yet it still feels personal and warm.

And then, there are the views. Oh, the views. Breathtaking doesn’t even begin to cover it. From every angle, you’re met with the magnificent sweep of the King Valley. But it’s the sunrises that truly took our breath away — each morning presenting something new: soft pastels one day, bold fiery skies the next. Always different, always stunning.

We could have stayed a whole lot longer. In fact, we already wish we had. But one thing is certain — we will be back.

This morning, we had the pleasure of meeting Marty, our host. What a warm and friendly person he is! It was such a delight to finally put a face to the name and to connect with the creator of this wonderful Airbnb. Meeting him only confirmed what we had already worked out about him — kind, thoughtful, and genuinely passionate about creating a welcoming space for his guests. It was a privilege to meet him in person and to be able to thank him for making our stay so special.

We were also thrilled to learn about his European and Nordic heritage — it added a lovely layer of connection to our stay. Discovering shared cultural threads and hearing a bit about his background made our conversation even more interesting. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love choosing Airbnbs — the personal stories and unexpected connections truly enrich the whole experience.

After leaving our Airbnb, we set off on our journey toward Milawa. We paid a visit to the Milawa Cheese Co., and what a treat it was!

They offer cheese tastings, which of course we couldn’t resist. Each sample was more tempting than the last, but in the end, we chose to buy some King River Gold — a rich, washed rind cheese full of character — and the David Brown Select Cheddar, which had a beautiful depth of flavour. It was such a lovely experience, both for the taste buds and the senses, and a must-stop for any cheese lover in the area.

Next door to the Cheese Factory is Milawa Bread – Artisan Bakers – and for me, it was love at first sight. The charming little bakery, with the scent of freshly baked bread wafting through the air, instantly drew me in.

The pairing of the Cheese Factory and the Artisan Bakers, complete with gorgeous outdoor dining, felt like a marriage made in heaven.

These are the kinds of places I absolutely love discovering on road trips — the unexpected gems that feel like little treasures tucked away, just waiting to be found.

Our next stop was the iconic Brown Brothers Winery in Milawa.

To me, Brown Brothers has always stood out as one of the most well-known and respected wineries in Australia, so I was especially eager to finally experience it in person.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear this place had something special.

The gardens were simply magnificent — bursts of colour from blooming flowers framed the paths, and the lush greenery created such a peaceful, elegant setting.

It felt like walking through a beautifully kept secret garden.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, a perfect blend of sophistication and country charm that instantly put us at ease.

The cellar door itself was full of character, with a lovely balance of modern touches and heritage charm.

It’s the kind of place you could easily lose track of time in — sipping wine, soaking up the beauty of the surroundings, and enjoying the simple pleasure of being somewhere that feels both historic and vibrant. Brown Brothers certainly lived up to its reputation and left us with lasting memories.

The journey continued with a brief stop in Myrtleford to stretch our legs, which turned out to be just what we needed.

There’s something so refreshing about stepping out of the car and taking a gentle stroll through a charming country town.

Surrounded by tree-lined streets and the backdrop of rolling hills, Myrtleford had a relaxed, welcoming feel.

We wandered for a little while, taking in the local shops and soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

It was the perfect pause in our journey — a chance to breathe, move, and enjoy a quiet moment before hitting the road again. Sometimes, it’s these small, spontaneous stops that add an extra layer of joy to a road trip.

We didn’t get far before making another spontaneous stop.

As we were driving along, we spotted a sign for a pepita farm. Now, we couldn’t just pass that by, not when Peter is affectionately called “Pepita” by my grandchildren! It felt like a sign — literally and figuratively — that we were meant to stop.

Curiosity got the better of us, so we turned in and were met with a warm and genuinely hospitable welcome.

The people there were more than happy to share their knowledge about the farm, the growing process, and the many health benefits of pepitas.

It was both interesting and heartwarming, and we truly appreciated how passionate they were about what they do.

The visit had that lovely, down-to-earth feeling you only get when you stumble upon something unexpected and authentic. We left with smiles on our faces and a fresh bag of pepitas in hand — a perfect souvenir from a stop that felt wonderfully personal.

We arrived in Bright just in time for lunch.

We made our way to a lovely café near the Ovens River called The Riverdeck Kitchen. The day was gloriously warm — 27 degrees Celsius and full of sunshine — so we couldn’t resist sitting outside to soak it all in.

The setting was lovely, dappled sunlight through the trees, and that relaxed hum of a town enjoying a beautiful day. We settled into a leisurely lunch, and every bite was fresh and delicious.

As we sat there, we watched a gentle stream of people passing by — some locals greeting each other with a smile, others clearly travellers like us, pausing to take in the charm of the place.

It truly felt like a gathering point, where paths cross and conversations linger over coffee, and where the joy of good food and great company fills the air.

It was one of those simple yet perfect moments.

Bright truly lives up to its name — it’s beautiful in every season, but there’s something particularly enchanting about it in autumn.

Even though this year has brought unusually warm weather, delaying the full display of autumn colours, we were still lucky enough to catch glimpses of the seasonal magic beginning to unfold.

After our relaxing lunch, we took a slow drive around the town, weaving through tree-lined streets and scenic backroads.

Here and there, bursts of gold, amber, and deep crimson lit up the landscape — like God had taken a paintbrush and started gently sweeping colour across the canvas.

The contrast of the warm sun against the cool tones of changing leaves gave the whole town a soft, glowing beauty. The trees were just beginning to turn here and there, promising even more colour in the coming days.

It was a peaceful, soul-nourishing kind of afternoon — the kind that fills you with quiet joy and makes you grateful to be exactly where you are.

There’s a special reason we’ve arrived in Bright this weekend, other than just the nature.

We have come here to spend precious time with my daughter and her family. We were so excited to see them again, and our hearts were full the moment we wrapped them in a big hug.

We all walked together from our accommodation into town, enjoying the warm afternoon air and soaking in the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

It was lovely just to wander through the streets, browsing the local shops, and sharing stories.

We ended the evening with dinner at a local pizza place — simple, delicious, and made even better by the company. Freyja, my 3-year-old granddaughter, marched into the pizza restaurant ahead of the rest of us and announced in a loud voice, ‘I want some pizza, please!’ The staff replied with a smile, ‘You’ve come to the right place!’

On our walk back, something delightful caught my eye: a charming little Christmas shop twinkling under the early evening light.

I made a mental note to return and have a proper look during the weekend — it looks like the kind of place filled with treasures.

As if the day hadn’t already filled my heart, my granddaughter surprised me with a gift — some bright, beautiful yellow flowers she’d picked out just for me. That small, thoughtful gesture lit me up from the inside out.

It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
