Time Together

There’s something sacred about spending time with your elderly mother.

You become both the daughter and the gentle guide — the one making sure she doesn’t trip on uneven garden paths, reminding her to drink water, and listening as she remembers stories from long ago.

Today, as I celebrated Mother’s Day with my own darling mum, I wanted it to feel like a soft gift — wrapped not in ribbons, but in peace.

We drove slowly to the hills, just the two of us, letting the rhythm of the road calm us.

The air grew cooler the higher we climbed, and the car filled with quiet conversation — sometimes drifting into silence, not awkward, but easy. She’s not the mother I remember from my childhood — quick, busy, full of energy. She’s softer now, slower, more thoughtful. I watch her hands rest gently in her lap, and I want this day to hold her gently in return.

Lunch was in a quiet restaurant called Seasons perched just above the beautiful Cloudehill Gardens.

The windows gave us a view that felt like a painting — autumn trees in their full glory, leaves drifting like confetti from the sky.

The staff saw us, not just as customers, but as a mother and daughter on a day that mattered.

They catered to both our dietary needs with care and kindness, no fuss. We shared a meal, but more than that — we shared presence.

Afterward, we wandered through the garden shop.

Mum stopped at a display of terracotta pots, her fingers tracing the rim of one as if remembering a time when her own garden was full of life and energy.

I watched her, heart aching slightly with gratitude and a hint of mourning for time’s quiet theft.

We ended our day walking through the George Tindale Memorial Gardens.

The ground was damp, the leaves thick underfoot.

Autumn had painted everything in its beautiful shades.

As we walked slowly, arms linked, a pair of brilliant King parrots landed in a nearby tree.

She gasped — not loudly, but with delight — and pointed them out like she would have when I was little.

That’s the thing about spending time with your elderly mother — it’s not just about what you do.

It’s about bearing witness to her, as she is now.

It’s about honouring the woman who once led you by the hand, by now offering her your arm.

It’s about slowing down, not because you have to, but because you want to match her pace and savour every step together.

Today wasn’t grand.

It was gentle.

But it held everything that mattered: time, care, love, and presence.

We shared a day together doing things we both love — enjoying gardens, the hills, a delicious lunch in a quiet café with beautiful views, nature, autumn leaves, ferns, towering mountain ash trees, and each other’s company.

This was a memorable Mother’s Day lunch, not just for where we went, but for how it felt: unhurried, thoughtful, and full of love. A day that gently honoured who she is, and all she’s been to me.
