Among the Tulips

Spring in Victoria has a way of drawing you outdoors, and today it led us to Silvan, where the hills were alive with colour at the Tesselaar Tulip Festival.

This year marks a special milestone — 70 years since the festival first began.

What started as a humble patch of blooms has grown into a celebration that now draws visitors from near and far, all eager to step into a world bursting with colour, music, and joy.

We arrived early, before the gates grew busy, with only birdsong and colour to greet us.

We’ve walked these fields before, but each spring the tulips seem to tell a new story — one of renewal, joy, and the simple pleasure of returning.

Over a million tulips blanketed the rolling fields in colour.

Under the spring sunshine, rows of red, pink, yellow, purple, and white swayed softly in the breeze.

It was impossible not to smile.

Everywhere we looked, there were families laughing, children playing among the tulip beds, and couples wandering hand in hand.

The festival grounds were alive with the sounds of cheerful music floating through the air.

The scent of freshly cooked food mingled with the sweetness of the flowers — Dutch pancakes, sizzling sausages, and good strong coffee for those needing a break between garden strolls.

We wandered from one area to another, discovering little treasures along the way.

Garden games, art displays, and the friendliest of festival staff all added to the cheerful spirit of the day.

For a few hours, we truly filled our world with colour and fun.

The tulips seemed to mirror life itself — vibrant, fleeting, and meant to be savoured.

Spring’s gentle warmth wrapped around us as we walked, reminding us of renewal, joy, and the simple beauty of being present in the moment.

As we left, I glanced back at the sea of flowers — a kaleidoscope against the Silvan hills — and couldn’t help but feel grateful.

Seventy years of blooms, and still they have the power to lift hearts and colour the world.

The tulips at Tesselaar are more than flowers; they’re a celebration of life, colour, and hope.

Surrounded by their blooms, laughter, and sunshine, I was reminded how important it is to pause, breathe deeply, and let joy take root again.

  1. Absolutely stunning! The rows of beautiful and colourful tulips and various flowers are a sight to see! I wonder if those rows of tulips are just to showcase the Tesselaar tulips or will some of them be sold? I imagine they would be past their best to be sold.
Oh those huge clogs! 😁 Peter is rocking the Dutch clog look! I hope he bought a pair! I have a photo of me in a set of huge clogs too, taken somewhere in the Netherlands years ago! They are funny!
Sounds like a delightful and an uplifting day!

    1. Thanks, Sirpa! It really was a feast for the eyes — so much colour and joy in one place! I think the tulips are just for the festival display, not for sale, and by now they’d be a bit weary after all that showing off. 😉 And the clogs — oh yes, Peter had his moment! I love that you’ve got a clog photo too — they’re such fun! 😄🌷

      1. Yes, I don’t think they could sell those tulips after the festival either.
Yes, gigantic clogs are a bit of fun to step into!

        Sirpa 🙂

      2. Haha yes! The tulips have had their time to shine! Peter stepped into the giant clogs — saying he can’t even fill his own shoes, let alone someone else’s! 😄🌷

  2. Haha, they are big shoes to fill! 😉

    Sirpa 👞

    1. Haha! That they are!
