Today we drove from Canberra to Wodonga, winding our way through the countryside with no real rush, just enjoying the long sweep of the road.

And along the way, we made a stop that has become something of a tradition for us—one of those places we simply can’t drive past without pulling in.

Nestled by the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, in the tiny, charming village of Jugiong, stands a beautifully restored 1850s pub — the kind of building that still whispers stories from another era.

The Sir George is one of our all-time favourites.

We’ve stopped there on our own over the years, but also with our US visitors, and even with Finnish relatives, proudly sharing a place that feels like an authentic slice of country Australia.

And every time, without fail, it exceeds expectations.

There’s something wonderfully peaceful about it — perhaps it’s the way the historic stone buildings sit so comfortably in the landscape, or the way the gardens seem to breathe out calmness.

Maybe it’s the friendly hum of locals and travellers mixing in the relaxed beer garden, a space that somehow manages to feel both lively and homely at the same time.

Just one minute off the Hume Highway, yet it feels like stepping into another world.

The Sir George isn’t just a pub; it’s an experience.

Alongside delicious food and that easygoing country hospitality, it also offers accommodation — gorgeous rooms that hold onto their heritage charm while offering all the comforts of modern living.

You really do feel like time slows down here.

Outside, the Potting Shed waits in the garden, while upstairs in the main building you’ll find a beautiful homewares and lifestyle store — each offering treasures you never knew you needed until they catch your eye.

Every corner seems thoughtfully curated, making it one of those “I’ll just browse — oh look, I’m carrying a bag now” kind of stops.

It’s a place that feels like home, even though you’re just passing through.

So once again, we found ourselves enjoying the old-fashioned warmth of this country pub — its charm, its history, and that unmistakable sense of welcome that keeps drawing us back, again and again.
