Our dear friend Dana is staying with us for a couple of weeks from Florida, and today was the perfect opportunity to experience some more of our beautiful corner of Victoria together. With Peter having the day off work, we decided to head out for a picnic lunch together.
But first, we made a stop at one of Dana’s favourite cafes—Cork on Cooks Corner in Kallista, right next to the lush Sherbrooke Forest.

Cork on Cooks Corner is truly a hidden gem.

A charming bistro and cellar door offering wine, food, and coffee, it’s nestled in the heart of the stunning Dandenong Ranges. The venue has a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff are always lovely.

Brett, the owner, greeted us with his usual friendly manner, and it was no surprise that he remembered Dana instantly. He affectionately calls her “Miss Louisiana,” a nickname he gave her the first time they met when he picked her Southern accent. Ever since, I’ve been “Miss Finland” and Dana “Miss Louisiana.”

Dana enjoyed one of their craft beers.

Peter stuck with his beloved coffee.

I, of course, went for my usual tea.

Sipping our drinks, we soaked in the cosy ambiance before continuing our adventure.
From Kallista, we made our way to Emerald, a charming village with delightful gift shops and quaint cafes. I always love strolling through Emerald Village, taking in the relaxed atmosphere. If you ever find yourself in Emerald, the Emerald Village Bakery and Cafe is an absolute must-visit. Their baked goods are divine, and the quality is hard to match!

After a leisurely walk through the village, we drove to Emerald Lake for our much-anticipated picnic. The area is simply beautiful, with lush greenery, calm waters, and the soothing sounds of nature.

Not far from our picnic spot was Emerald railway station, where we could hear the famous Puffing Billy steam train chugging along its tracks, adding a touch of nostalgia to the day.

We found a perfect spot on the lawn under a big gum tree, providing us with some welcome shade from the sun.

Laying out our picnic blanket, we enjoyed a relaxed and unhurried lunch, completely immersed in the natural surroundings.

What truly captivated us was the incredible birdlife.

It was as if the native birds had decided to join our little gathering. All three of us kept taking photos as we couldn’t believe how trusting the birds were. Many of these fantastic close-ups were taken by Dana.

Kookaburras, magpies, butcher birds, ducks, and vibrant rosellas all made their way over, showing no fear.

One by one, they came close, curiously watching us, making us feel like we were part of the landscape rather than just visitors.

There is something so special about moments like these, where nature embraces you and time slows down.

The experience was undeniably Australian—enjoying a picnic under towering gum trees, accompanied by friendly native birds, and hearing the distant whistle of Puffing Billy.

If you’re ever looking for a peaceful day out, I highly recommend a visit to Emerald Lake.

Whether for a picnic, a leisurely walk, or simply to enjoy the native wildlife, it’s an experience that brings you closer to nature in the most magical way.

Capturing these moments made the experience special.
